When I was in middle school and high school, I had a tutor. I don’t know the exact price, but I’m sure my parents dropped some pretty serious money to have me get some extra help in my honors math and science classes.

With a college wish list that includes Notre Dame, Stanford and Yale, Como Park senior Aimee Vue has big plans for her future—but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to make an impact right now.

In the past two years alone, Vue has worked as a youth engagement assistant for the Minnesota Alliance With Youth, interned for the Chris Coleman for Saint Paul campaign and served as a high school page  for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Bao Vang first came to the United States as a refugee in 1980 and has called Saint Paul home ever since.

“I love being in the city, being close to the various different stores and restaurants and the diversity,” Vang said. “I like being in the community, and of course my work is in Saint Paul.”

What if someone were to tell you that a local man became a high school principal at age 24 and not only had success, but went on to flourish as an entrepreneur? Well, that man’s name is Gayle Smaller.

Smaller is a life-long Minnesota resident, having grown up in North Minneapolis and attended St. Paul’s Central High School. His father was a football coach at Central, and for a time, Smaller’s goal was to play football professionally.

Hamilton E. Bell has been recognized by Who’s Who in Education and served as an educator in Minnesota for over 20 years, but education wasn’t always his primary focus.

“My true reason [for getting into education] is because I was changing careers,” Bell said. “I always had a passion for education, but I’d just got laid off. No one would hire me in the field I was in. It was saturated.”
